Includes notes on a variety of topics including Indian agents and their character, the needs of various Indian schools and hospitals, definitions of Indian words, a description of an Indian court, and the methods of land allotments on Indian reservations. A few letters from various missionaries, including Alfred L. Riggs, and several printed and hand-drawn maps are also found in the notebook. Davis's friendship with missionary Mary C. Collins is evidenced in the notes regarding Standing Rock Agency. Dakota Indians, particularly Lakotas, are discussed in the notebook but material on the Shawnee and Auga Caliente of California are also included.

Clergyman, Indian rights activist. Little is known of Rev. Davis other than that he was an officer in the Indian Rights Association and lived in Newton, Massachusetts. As an official of the Indian Rights Association, Rev. Joshua Davis traveled widely throughout the West visiting various Indian reservations, missions, and schools.
